Grey fleet: the drivers you insure without knowing

Grey fleet is the term for employee-owned vehicles used for work. It is almost always larger than the owned fleet, almost never recorded, and it carries the same corporate liability exposure as a company van.

What the employer is actually responsible for

An employer has duties toward any vehicle used for work, whoever owns it. That means confirming the driver holds a valid licence, the vehicle has a current MOT, and the driver’s own motor policy carries business use. A personal policy without business use does not cover the journey, and the shortfall lands on the employer.

The check is not onerous: licence, MOT and certificate at induction, then annually. The absence of the check is what turns an ordinary accident into a corporate liability question.

At a glance

Class: Fleet

The exposure is not the car. It is that nobody has checked the licence, the MOT or the insurance in three years.
